I discovered them through several B&Ms, but haven't looked for any other e-tailer than Egars. I would have to imagine there's
more than one. :D

Full disclosure - almost all of my sticks are less than $2, so perhaps I'm not the best one to be giving advice here :)
Nonetheless, here's my current list of good cheapies:
Cabo Classic
Gurkha Park Avenue
Nica Libre
5 Vegas Gold
Schizo
Bahia Red
Bahia Blue
John Bull
Graycliff G2
5 Vegas classic
Buenaventura
Bahia Trinidad
5 Vegas A
(I've also got a running list of bad cheapies if anyone's interested)
Anything from Oliveros is very good after a few years of rest.
They can be found on the bid-sites regularly for about two bucks each.
Our Oba Oba by Perdomo is one of our most frequently re-ordered bundles. They go for as low as $1.44 a stick in a wide range of sizes:

Disclaimer: YMMV! Bruck's list of bad or eeh cheapies:
everything in po' boy sampler
almost everthing in bender ender
GVH02
La Perla Havana Black Pearl
Fuente Curly Head
Blue Label B2
Perdomo Lot 23
601
Obsidian
Bahia Icon
Arganese
Nuther disclaimer: I haven't actually smoked all of the sticks in the po boy or bender ender samplers. Also there might be some non-cheapies in there - not sure bcs if I'm not buying any, who cares what the price is?
I just wanted to say thank you on behalf of a friend who was in the same situation as TS, I sent him this thread and he said he found some great budget smokes. Especially the Black Pearl.
You can routinely buy the Cuba Libre on CBid for $2 or less per stick. These are one of my "go to" staples and I always keep some on hand. When I smoke them, I often find myself smiling about how cheap they are.
