I'll be doggone danged if I ain't lucky that I didn't really care for the Esoterica blends I've tried. Definitely not bad (and definitely not "one of *those* guys" who's gonna holler about it all the time), maybe would partake if it weren't impossible to find, but honestly the $50+ per pound price tag availability aside is a bit steep for me.

All in all, though, I don't consider less than $4 an ounce too bad for what I consider premium tobacco. It is right in line with bulk Gawith and cheaper than McClelland or any decent tinned tobacco.
The only significantly cheaper thing I really like it well-aged Stokkebye Flakes (on sale).
I would love to get your suggestions on really good but cheap tobacco! I'm certainly no snob. (Well, maybe just a tad, but I'm open-minded!)
The stokkebye flakes are quite good, though they've gone up in price recently. Used to be able to get them for $42.50 from CI, and use a 20% coupon. That was a pretty darn good deal.Quote:

Daughters & Ryan and Cornell & Diehl make up the bulk of my cellar, mainly because I like them a lot and they are very inexpensive. The fact that they use little to no humectant adds to the value. I don't particularly care for most of the McClelland stuff i've tried, at least not enough to offset the fact that it costs nearly twice as much as D&R or C&D (during sales is when I buy those) and you get less. I haven't smoked any Samuel Gawith (although I like their nasal snuffs a lot), but do love G&H and when I have some more income will probably splurge on a bit. Jiminks turned me on to that Smoker's Pride Rich Taste a while ago, it's sort of like prince albert minus the PG-- I ended up getting almost 2 pounds of it for free, when CI/P&C/cigar.com were sending out free gift cards last holiday season.
I am definitely against smoking tobacco you don't like just because it's cheap. I just consider myself fortunate that I've found a bunch of tobaccos that happen to be cheap, that I quite like. I have some GLP blends that I like quite a bit, for example, but I don't consider them better enough to warrant the extra cost over C&D. of course a lot of people hate C&D/GLP and say it's harsh and green tasting; D&R would probably be even worse for those people (a lot of people won't even try D&R because they think it's RYO) etc. So for those people 90% of what I smoke is off the table, just different smokes for different folks.
