I have many pipe nails, a czech tool, and a few fancier pipe tools that came as add-ons with P&C purchases, but what I have found is that when doing my initial light/tamp/relight I use the bottom corner of my zippo to press down the tobacco. And then while smoking I mostly tamp with my finger. The Czech tool or pipe nails mostly find use after smoking, to dig out any stubborn ashes and dottle.
I'd say in general my pipe tools see more use as snuff spoons than tampers.

I puff on the go a lot and hate putting a dirty tamper into my pockets.
This MacBaren tamper is my favorite because the pick and tamper are both concealed.
