I have found that Vapers like Dunhill Navy Rolls and Escudo have a pleasant (to me) room note.
Kind of a bready yeasty aroma.
However, they can nip at your tongue if you chief on it too hard.
Have you tried the drugstore blends like Carter Hall and Prince Albert?
They smell rather pleasant and I don't think they would bite if you tried to get them to.
Good room note is the problem. I choose tobaccos based on flavor and lack of bite. Usually the ones with a nice room note have no flavor so I tend to avoid them. Only one I could think of to recommend would be Sam Gawith Chocolate Flake. I believe that one has a fairly decent room note. You could also try G&H Bob's Chocolate Flake but IMO that one tastes like soap unless you age it, semi sealed for months in end.
I have smoked some Pete Stokkebye flake (I forget which one) and some Captain Black (gold packaging) but that's about it. And it's been a little while since I messed with the pipe. Just looking to indulge again.Quote:

The first two don't always get rubbed. I rub out the milder flavored ones like Virginia flakes (similar to FVF & Bullseye flake) but the stronger blends (think G&H dark flake and ropes & twists) I try to keep intact as much as possible - that usually means fold n stuff or cube cut for those. SG chocolate flake I like 'crunched out' where I just smash the flake up some with my fingers but leave lots of chunks and some finer ribbons. I like G&H Louisiana flake 'crunched out' as well.

Brian - unforch for our discussion here, "bite" doesn't always affect everyone the same. Also, technique has something to do with it - smoking slowly (cooly) usually helps. Also, it helps to dry the tobacco out, moreso than you might think necessary. & in general, the non-aros usually bite me less than the goopy aros. & another thing - as you smoke a pipe more, your tongue and hard palate get less sensitive.
I've found that the best way to get bitten like a rattlesnake is to try an smoke the wet dregs in the bottom of your pipe. Best to dump and try again if you get wetness in the heel.
Back to that learning curve!
I'll just have to see as I figure it out. But thankful for the knowledge/experience that you guys are sharing.

When I first started piping in earnest a few years ago, I tried a number of different things, mostly aros, & nothing really moved me until I had a VA flake (sorry, can't remember which brand it was). But what really rang my bell was the English blends. The first one I tried was Cornell & Diehl Pirate Kake, & it's still one of my all-time favorites. Another good one is Esoterica Penzance which unfortunately is nigh impossible to find, but (don't tell the other guys here :)) I have a ton of it - if you PM me your address I'll send you some.

BTW... English style tobacco's WILL ghost pipes. (If ya open a sample and it smells like a campfire it's an English.) You might consider getting a corn cob pipe to try them out. A Missouri Meerschaum (cob pipe) can be bought at wallgreens, etc, for a few dollars and are actually really good pipes with their unique smoking properties, even if they look a bit low-brow.

Pipes don't have to be expensive. Cobs, as ya know, are very cheap yet smoke beautifully. I have several of the Ropp "Vintage" line of pipes and they were 70-80$ each. I like their horn stems, and the bowls were carved in the 50's, I believe. Huge boxes of them were found in storage and the Ropp factory has been hand carving stems for them slowly and letting smokingpipes.com sell them.
edit: the reason the old bowls are important is that there is very little access today to really good briar.

I have 6 or 7 Savinellis and they are all fantastic. Most are lower end entry level stuff. One is a Punto Oro. They are all great smokers.
I have 3 Petersons. In my limited experience, they have been hit or miss. The only one I'm truly attached to is a pre-Republic model. Go figure.
I have a 1 Nording that is a really good smoker.
Lots of great pipes in the $100 and under range.
