Input on a theory

So, i have a partial box of cigars I just received, and at least in the past, vendors were well known to store and ship cigars at a very high rh, thus necessitating waiting a month or more for them to drop to your preferred rh before being able to smoke one, so my thought was, to put a small well verified accurate, hygrometer in the closed, latched, box with the cigars, while they are in my big tupperdor and thus seeing roughly at least, what rh the cigars currently are.

Logically, it seems like this should work.

I tried it yesterday, and after sitting overnight, the hygrometer read 59% when I checked it this morning (the rh of my 74qt containers is 65%).

The box had spent 4 weeks in transit, and was not sealed in any way, and there was no humidification with it, so again, logic tells me that they would be on the drier side rather than wetter side, so the hygrometer reading seems to make sense.

Curious on opinions about this method of testing rh of newly received boxes.

Good idea that should work within a reasonable margin of error, or crackpot idea that would be pointless?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Technically the hygrometer would be reading the humidity level of the air inside the box, not the humidity of the actual cigars. I would assume that the cigars would be about the same humidity level as the air in the box (especially if they have been in the box for 4+ weeks). However, I have no scientific evidence on which to base my assumption.

Agree with Kayla. Speaking of Kayla- check out the HumidiMeter! Great way to check the actual cigar’s humidity level. Only downside is it wont work on smaller ring gauges but definitely a great tool to have

Also time of year plays a key role in humidity. Warmer air can hold more moisture so the cooler it is the less moisture the air can hold.

Yeah, one would think that the cigars would act similar to Bovedas and if they were a high rh, so would the air, and if they were dryer, the air would be too.

The box apparently seals pretty close to airtight as the container its in is 65%, and inside the box read 59%, so i would think that adds a little validity to the theory.

Planning to get one of the Humidimeter units for testing cigars for my birthday in March, so will know the rh of any smokes for sure then.

Just toying around with a method for the meantime and I'm struggling not to smoke one yet,lol

My 74qt containers maintain 65/65 + or minus 2 steadily. The facility is well climate controlled at 68 degrees, and my room has a separate thermostat for heat and air conditioning, and stays between 65 to 68 degrees steadily.

It seems to me if you put 5-10 of the cigars in question into a large ziplock bag with a calibrated hygrometer, in a couple of days you should know the cigars Rh.

Does anyone else remember a thread where members did this on new arrivals and posted their readings over a period of about a month? If memory serves me (highly unlikely) the cigars were not shipped nearly as wet as believed from forum banter.

Very true.

I'm sure that thread was before my time here but I'll try to find it. Sounds interesting.

To me, it doesn't seem like 99% of vendors are storing and shipping at a high rh like it seemed was common 10 years ago or so.

I've smoked plenty rott and only 1 box had issues i would attribute to being to moist.

Everything else has smoked just fine.

I think lately with the supply chain problems, some cigars have been sitting in crates for months. I have some boxes come to me that contained, flat, dried out, crunchy humidification packs.

I certainly couldn't.

She completely blindsided me with it.

Extremely generous of her, yet again, like the Navy At Ease cigar special made for 1 event in her shop, that she gave me the last one of, plus 2 Marines to smoke so i could try them as the Navy one is a display item and won't ever be getting smoked.

Ended up giving one of the Marine ones to a Vietnam combat veteran Marine who smokes cigarillos a lot. Really put a smile on his face, and he too is just holding on to it. Even showed it to his son when he visited and pointed me out as the one who gave it to him when I met his son, so he's clearly very happy about it.

So she made an old Marine Veteran very happy.

Very generous lady and has good taste in smokes too, as 99% of the cigars she posts are ones I have liked too,lol
