I do make my own from time to time. I'd say do it. The pre-drills are the best way to start IMHO. Vermont Freehand aka Steve Norse has just what you are looking for and then some.

Nice looking pipe, something I could see myself doing at some point
My brother has been trying his hand at making pipes, trying to get him to join the forum since it's "fresh" now.
Pyro: what do you use as a finish?
Some pipes I made over the last couple years......I am really slow lol

Sorry I didn't see this before. For finish I use regular leather dye, then a little danish oil & shellac to set it. And independent pipe maker taught me to do that. And at the end, I buff with Carnuaba.

You guys have skills!
I'm going to have to give that a try some time.
@OnePyroTec , that Author turned out great!
@rx2man , love the grain on those and the bamboo stems.
Working with wood is something I have never been good at. You are both very talented.
Getting the holes lined up was hard with a drill press as it would shift and screw things up. Once I picked up a metal lathe I could drill holes great. So getting one of the pre drilled blocks takes care of that. Some hand files and sand paper takes care of the rest. Just take your time and keep it simple like a straight billiard and you should do all right.
The "pipe maker forums" have a lot of info.
Yeahhhh I'm looking at some Norse pipe "kits" already have most of the equipment and finishing supplies, can make any tooling I need. Wife is like oh hell... but she smokes a pipe too thanks to Rob.
To those that make their own pipes: Would a dremel work for this? I happen to have a decent dremel just need bits.
My first attempt for a contest I hosted elsewhere. The pipe smokes amazingly well - as good as my higher end pipes, and was just a pre-drilled block as has been suggested.
