I do make my own from time to time. I'd say do it. The pre-drills are the best way to start IMHO. Vermont Freehand aka Steve Norse has just what you are looking for and then some.

My brother has been trying his hand at making pipes, trying to get him to join the forum since it's "fresh" now.

Sorry I didn't see this before. For finish I use regular leather dye, then a little danish oil & shellac to set it. And independent pipe maker taught me to do that. And at the end, I buff with Carnuaba.Quote:

Going with one of the pre drilled kits makes it pretty easy. There are also roughed out pipes, no stems, for sale on ebay pretty cheap.Quote:

I was never good with wood either. I just kept at it til my hands could do what my brain wanted. There were 10 just horrible not even pipes before one even resembled a pipe. Then about 5 that were marginal after 15 or so they started to look pretty good.Quote:

Briar kits, especially if they have burl, aren't a standard saw mill product so they're often cut from more desirable briar than that used by machine makers.
