To screw or not to screw ?

Hey all - don't know that I've ever seen this as a post topic so thought I would toss it out and see what the experts do.

Somewhere long ago I saw a post with a picture of a stogie smoked down more than I thought possible by screwing a plain old screw into the end. Pretty effective and allows you to get those last few puffs without burning the fingers, similar to something I'm told is called a roach clip I think ? Tried it and it works great and since then I've had a nice long 4" screw here on my desk that I use specifically for this purpose. Long enough to even "hook" it over the ashtray.

What else do you guys use to avoid burnt fingertips ?
Surely you big B&M (none close to me sadly) smokers don't walk around carrying a screw in your pocket ?
Do I need to put a screw in my car and can I handle the insertion while driving ?

What other creative things do you guys use to go low ?

Leatherman on occasion. But I've heard some folks throw it in a bowl! Any old cob will work.

Well since you asked.... :) I use my handy dandy go anywhere Stogy Toy to hold my nub while I smoke it down....

Corn cob holders.

I was under the impression that the pointy end of a divot tool was actually for nubbing a cigar.

Around the shop I've been known to slip them into the 12 point box end of a short end wrench.

Never would have thought of a corn cob holder or a box wrench.
Have used a divot tool and golf tee but that Stogie Toy is pretty nice looking and looks like it would fare better in the pocket than a corn cob sticker

There was a gent on the old site, Hekthor who made handcrafted pipes, still does for all I know, but he also made some nice cigar accessories. I personally have one of his nubbers with a screw-on cap in the blue/black acrylic. Awesome pickup.

For a long time I packed my draw tool with me and used that....up until the time I wasn't thinking and put it in my pocket, sat down and proceeded to jab myself in the leg. It was a serious "ouch" moment.
Now I just have a short plastic toothpick I keep in my travel case.

If a body is going to use a screw, make sure it isn't galvanized!

I have used screws, nails, toothpicks, pocket knife, corn cob holders and even a stick! lol Our B.O.T.L. Jenady was making some really nice nub tools a few years ago. I am fortunate to have one and I use it in my cave all the time.

It is impeccably crafted out of stainless steel and is a joy to use.

I use a toothpick when needed, but Jay's tool would be much classier.

I did use a screw once though.

I have taken my EDC out of my pocket and smoked the nub on the end of a 3" Kershaw Leek blade. People look at you funny...but I've grown accustom to that.

I don't like mine that "warm", I almost never smoke a cigar down to a nub. Nothing like what you guys have pulled off!

Sunday,while at work,I nubbed a short story using a piece of stainless wire we had laying around. The problem with the single poker method is the ability of the nub to spin around. I quit on this one when I singed my mustache. Lol

I suppose I lack creativity because when it gets to that point, I just go to the humi and pull out another. I guess that's what happens when you have more cigars than you smoke in a lifetime. :)

they are well worth it espically within the 3-4 dollar range

I use time tested bum technology: a toothpick.

Oh, I forgot to mention that I have also used the cover on a torch lighter too. Twas a wide single torch xikar lighter that has been d.c. But the cover is 1.5" wide with a decent spring to hold tension in the "closed" position.

When using a knife I will sometimes stab into the nub. Tother times I will close the blade onto the stogie and thusly hold it between the blade and the body of the knife.

I usually just use the poker of my pipe tool.

Well I wanted to report back that I have upgraded and retired my screw.
Wife dragged me to a trinket show and I came across a wood guy - made primarily wood pens and pencils but had a few other things.
I picked up something he called a woman's helper, which was an alligator (err roach) clip on a wooden stem and he immediately tells me whatever I want to use it for once I purchase it is ok with him but it is designed to assist in getting on bracelets..... thanks dude

It's actually something called a seam ripper and it has 2 sizes - one is shown out here and the other is turned in for storage. It works great, looks alot better than a large screw and the cigars don't spin at all. His wife did not look happy when she was told on the intended use, but took the money just the same. Would have never thought of it but figured I'd share and once again thank you all for the ideas.
