Some vitolas have a very gradual taper on the head. I normally use the punch on the bottom of my lighter, but I have a cheap guillotine cutter for cigars like this. How much should you cut off, though? It seems like if you want to have a large opening, you'd be cutting off nearly an inch!
you mean those cigars that got that cow tit thing at the top..never had one of those.
Pretty sure it's a torpedo, I normally cut off around a half inch but if the draw is to tight I will clip a little more.
I normally cut off 1/4 of an inch on torpedoes. Cut small, check draw, cut as needed and stay as far away from shoulder as you can.
had one of those pigtail ones..when a Bum here sent it I thought it was a dried worm, like in that tequeal stuff.

I've been using the Dickman cut lately. Haven't had to spit yet....
I use a V cutter on those tips. It works great and you don't have to worry about cutting to much.
I cut mine with my pocket knife, I keep a sharp edge so it slices them nicely
I generally cut it to a 44rg-ish opening. Small enough that I get the benefit of a funneled draw, but large enough to fit my comfort level. Honestly though, I'm not a major fan of torps. Nothing against them, I'd just prefer a straight-up 46-50rg than a 52 or 54rg that's funneled down.
2-3 cuts from my Perfect Cutter. I check the draw after 2 cuts and if it needs more I give it 1 more cut.
I guess i use the "Dickman" cut..didnt know what it was called just a diagonal cut that opens up a torp shaped cigar for easy draw..
I also use a v-cutter if its close by..

haven't tried a vcut but will give it a go on my next toropedo. I usually cut off about 3/8 of an inch from the tip of a torpedo, check draw, and if needed cut some more.

Good question. With a torpedo, I go for about a 1/4" to 3/8" cut, and I have learned that cutting less than it looks like I should (with a normal ring gauge cutter), gets me to that point. So, I cut as little as possible, and if need be go for more. Whereas, if I cut too much to begin with I can't put it back. Know what I mean? Jeez. I don't think non cigar-smokers appreciate what we go through to relax and enjoy our smokes. lol. :)
I don't smoke many tapered cigars but I do have the Oliva V Torpedos. These require about a 1/2" cut or there's no getting a draw.
I have been told that angle cuts are good. I tried it both ways and do not notice much difference.
