Gauging interest in a Kentucky Derby Contest

Pete and I have discussed some ideas for having a contest/lottery around the 141st running of the Kentucky Derby on May 2nd. We thought rather than pick the winner, we'd make it more of a game of chance and try to pick the last place finisher. We'd also offer prizes from our personal stashes for anyone who lands a trifecta or exacta for the last three or two finishers.

If you would be interested in playing, post your interest here. I don't want to bother laying out rules and details unless we have enough to play. We're thinking around 12 is the ideal number to account for scratches and keep guys from getting stuck with a 2-1 horse when you're trying to finish last :)

Tobias, great minds must think a like (Pete and Myself, of course) as I was thinking about setting one up on the cigar side!

I was thinking of giving folks a $50 bankroll to bet win, place, show, with whom ever wins the most money getting a prize from me. Thought it might be too complicated, so anxiously watching yours (so I can steal it)! :)

Yeah, Harvey. This one if for pipe smokers because the wagers and payouts would be in pipe tobacco. :pipe: I think Andy was talking about doing one on the cigar side.

I understand, but you guys just make it so interesting, I am constantly googlin the pipes an tobaccos you guys list everyday in the what did you smoke. A free(greatest word) pipe an tobacco might bring me back to smokin a pipe. enjoy your contest, I will be watching...

I know nothing about horse racing. Unless you count that one time in Vegas when I was drunk....I was an expert at all things that day....

Anyways, I love sport and gambling. OK I love gambling more probably....what I'm trying to say is I'm in.

I'm in! I haven't picked a winner yet so I must be closing in on something.

Alright...we've got two, plus myself, and I believe, Pete. I'm thinking we need 8 total to get it off the ground in some form. Four more and we'll proceed.

When Tobias and I were kicking around this idea I was thinking about how to prevent you from having an edge :).

Andy's a great horseman but he must be laughing because picking the last place finisher in the Derby is about as random as it gets. Well bet Derby horses often finish far back in most years because it's a longer distance than they're used to running and it's always a huge field AND there's never been a disqualification in the history of the race - anything goes. In the 1933 Derby, Broker's Tip and Head Play were nose to nose throughout the stretch run as their jockeys fought each other and there were no disqualifications (no video) and that tradition (no DQs) has stood ever since. It was Broker's Tip only win.

I'll put up a tin (come on - of course it will be unopened!) of Germain's Plum Cake (2014).

One of the neat things about thoroughbred racing are horse pedigrees. Here's a link to a site that will show the horses 4 (or 5) generation pedigree (just type in the horses name and press HORSE SEARCH at the top left):

Lots of other sites, with a search on Kentucky Derby 2015, are out there with discussions about the race. You can do just as well as any pundit when picking the last place finisher!!

Most likely that pipe is gonna make good tobacco taste nasty.

Luckily, one of the best pipes in the world is also VERY inexpensive. Missouri Meerschaum corn cob pipes are the kitties titties. Sweet and cool smoking, and able to smoke bowl after bowl without a rest, unlike more expensive Briar pipes.

Go to Walmart or Wallgreens, and pick one up for just a few dollars. If ya live WAY back in some dark hollow, and don't wanna do the drive, you can get 'em from Amazon too.

I just thought of another option that might be good for you, Harvey, seein' as how yer handy: Make a cherry wood pipe.

Find a branch of a cherry tree that looks to be about the right size for a pipe bowl with a smaller branch (stem sized) coming off the main branch. Cut the smaller branch to just a few inches long and drill it till it extends into the center of the bigger part of the branch. Now drill a larger hole SLOWLY into the bigger branch till it just barely touches the draft hole (the smaller branch's smaller drilled hole). You want the draft hole at the very bottom of the pipe bowl. This is important for the bowl to smoke properly, and not frustrate the hell outta ya. All ya need now is to fit a reed, or cane, to fit in the stem. Cut the reed to whatever length ya like.

I've been told that other fruit woods work as well, but I KNOW for a fact that cherry wood makes a nice tasting, cool smoking pipe.

I know I can buy pipes most anywhere..but bein cheap I like gettin things cheap or free or in trades..so I been thinkin today maybe I'll make someone an offer they cant turn down....now it's just who is that...ALSO I WANT TO KEEP BUMPIN THIS THREAD so I can see what you guys are doin.

Ive made a few pipes by hand for others...even tried smokin a pipe for awhile..just addicted to nic..and when I want afix its right now...but this ol man likes quessin games..win or lose I like to play..

So price of admission is two ounces of sealed tobacco? Is it a game of chance or skill or both? Is a tin of C&D Epiphany with at least a year on it adequate for entry? Do I ask an inordinate amount of questions?

I'll post up the rules this evening because it sounds like we have enough players. In a nutshell: whoever finishes last, among our picks, wins the contest. We'll also have special prizes from Pete and Myself if anyone can hit an exacta or trifecta for the last two or three horses.

The Rules (by popular demand :) )

1.The buy in is 1 tin or 2oz of premium bulk (ie, no pouches, Lane, or Sutliff for the sake of offending those who avoid said blends)
2.The goal is to have your horse finish behind everyone else's. Since the field will exceed the number of participants, you just need to worry about losing to your fellow pipers.
3.Pick order will be randomly assigned after the sign-ups close (4-26)
4.Picks themselves will be made between 4-27 and 5-1, the race is on 5-2.
5.You pick your losing horse AND and a losing exacta and losing trifecta- these can include the same horses as other contestants, but your last place horse must be unique!
6.If anyone hits the exacta or trifecta, they will get a special prize from Pete and I.
7.If your losing horse scratches prior to derby day, you will be assigned another horse by random number generator so that you can still win the pot, your exacta and trifecta are, however, screwed.
8.Winner (or in this case, loser) takes all, and all players will be provided an address to ship to directly.

Just don't pick a horse(s) with good odds (2-1 or 3-1, etc.) and you should be alright :)
