Do you go through several pipe cleaners every time you have a bowl?

Is it just me?

It seems like every time I smoke a bowl in one of my briars I go through 2-3 fluffy pipe cleaners to get rid of the gurgle.
Maybe this is why I like cobs so much. Don't have that problem.

I don't have as much trouble when I smoke my Peterson but it's a p-lip. It is not a system pipe though. It does gurgle at times but not as bad as a fishtail.

I think my next pipe purchase will be a Peterson system pipe. I've heard that helps a lot.

Anyway, just wondering if you all have the same issue. Maybe my technique is just poor.

I have 1 pipe that tends to gurgle a bit, rarely bad enough I need to put a pipe cleaner through it though. I usually just bring the one pipe cleaner out with me in case I need it but usually wind up using after i finish the bowl to clean it up.

So far I have found that I like a clean pipe. So I clean a lot. I do not notice or care about gurgles as much as a change in taste.
I usually notice that halfway through a smoke it starts to taste harsh. Cleaners fix this immediately.

I have smoked through gurgle and been happy, its the taste that matters so far.

I also do this with cigar purging. A cigar I thought was a dud will return great flavors after a purge for me.

Probably my technique, but I have found it a great benefit for pipes and cigars.

I used to gurgle more a long time ago...now it rarely happens. I use one pipe cleaner that I run through the pipe before returning it to the rack after smoking. Try drying your leaf more and being conscious of breathing into the stem when you're clenching.

make sure you dry out your baccy good. believe me when I say if it looks dry, dry it some more. if it looks really really dry then you good to go. also you may be puffing to fast. And if you smoking Aros they tend to be gooped up with extra topping that would cause a gurgle.

I definitely don't feel comfortable saying this, but in this case, I'm with the Shempster. Dry it thoroughly and that will do the most to depress the gurgle. As far as pipe cleaners, I just use one. I use one end to clear and collect any debris and then I leave the other end in there to absorb any residual moisture. I'll leave that end in there for about 24hrs.

It may be the moisture content that's making it happen.
I smoke a lot of SG flakes and we all know how they come.

Usually when I get home from work, I'll lay out a flake. Then about 3 hours later I'll rub it out and smoke it. It may just not be enough time.

I'll also watch out for breathing into the stem like Tobias mentioned. That likely happens often as well.

I'll take @Shemp Jizzle advice and try to dry it out until it looks too dry. I don't know why I have such a fear of that. For some reason I think if I dry it too much the flavor will be gone.

I know you want to look at a mason jar and see all the pretty flakes in complete form but i have pre rubbed flakes and let the whole tin room dry for 1-2 hours and just jar them ready rubbed. Flakes hide a ton of moisture.

cuts the drying time in half when you get the yearning for a bowl.

I've actually thought about that before and I think I will try that.

Have you, or anyone else here ever tried the cubed method where you cut it with scissors? I was wondering about that as well.
I saw a Youtube video where a guy let the flakes dry for a few hours, then cut them up in cubes and jarred them.

I've cut up flake and coins with scissors but didn't try to make cubes. It makes it easier to rub out and speeds the drying time.

I like my pipe tobaccy as wet as an otter's pocket, so I just deal with gurgle and have learned to like it.

I wonder if clenching is part of the problem. I seldom clench, but when I do there's more likely to develop a gurgle. Most of the time, no gurgle, even with tobacco that's had no drying time, including flakes. Often when I take the pipe out of my mouth, I'll hold it at a 45%+ angle for a moment, which probably runs moisture back into the bowl, where it evaporates from the heat.

When I get gurgling, that's my cue to slow down and let the fire cool. Meanwhile, to dissipate the existing liquid, what I do is roll the pipe around (keeping it mainly upright) to let the excess liquid adhere to the sides of the bowl and soak in. I've never heard of anyone else doing this, which leads me to ask, is this wrong? :)

I use pipe cleaners while I smoke because it makes the pipe taste better without the tars in the shank.

I've started using pipe cleaners on my lungs and it's really done wonders for the gurgles. Used to be, every single time I smoked there'd be a gurgle.

It's not disgusting to me, I can't say that I "like it", but I do not try to fix it right away.
I try to figure out why its gargling. Still checking it out, I guess.
Does not seem to affect the taste. At least right away.
And, just to be clear, I do fix the gurgle with Pipe Cleaners, I just don't rush to do it sometimes.

I am pretty sure that I am the weird one. Heh Heh. I think that most react as you do.

Pretty sure that this may be my problem. Most of the time, when the gurgle appears in force, its when I am doing something else while smoking. I will hold the pipe in my mouth more and I am not paying as much attention to the smoke.

I also tend to breathe out through the pipe, which I thinks adds more moisture to the smoke. Doh.

I'll start with this caveat, whatever works for you is what's right but there are technical reasons that create gurgle that aren’t being addressed. I intend no offense to anyone’s preferred methods or technique.

Every smoker gurgles at one time or another. On another forum one fellow claims that a larger draught hole solves the problem. Perhaps for him but I don’t give a whit about the size because it doesn't affect my smoke. I use pipe cleaners to absorb moisture and clear the airway during the smoke. You should too. Do it as many times as you feel necessary. I reuse the cleaner unless it’s gets too moist or dirty.

There are many reasons for gurgle including:

1. Excessive salivation that flows into the stem (more common for clenchers).
2. Tobacco too tightly packed at the bottom of the bowl.
3. Draught hole too low in the tobacco chamber.
4. A partial obstruction of the chamber airway by a piece of tobacco that gets excessively moist from it’s position and the airflow. This wet piece of tobacco is both felt and heard as gurgle as you smoke.

Other than #3, the smoker can control the other factors. #4 is, in my experience, the most common reason for gurgle and the larger air passage of the cob, because it’s more difficult to obscure, gurgles less (or not at all). The same reason that the smoker who likes larger drill size has reduced gurgle. Hopefully the following will help you reduce gurgle with any pipe.

#1 - Saliva and less so, moist tobacco, can get the tobacco wet but without a reservoir (#3) it will only make smoking through the dottle more difficult rather than causing gurgle. Of course if you submerge the thing in saliva, well...

#2 - Tightly packed tobacco (bottom of the bowl) or excessive tamping presses tobacco against the airway and causes problem #4. Try packing more lightly and tamp gingerly and gradually.

#3 - This is a technical problem that allows moisture to pool (even if only slightly) and it can augment or outright cause gurgle. Unless you want to mess with drilling the chamber lower (DON’T do this) you’ll just have to do the best that you can.

#4 - Fill the bottom of the bowl loosely with larger pieces of moist tobacco so that you don’t produce flakes that can obstruct airflow. Tamping pushes the tobacco and it may block the airway.

I mean no offense but drying and (excessive) rubbing of tobacco is a crutch that causes some problems. Dry tobacco loses flavor and nuance. It burns faster and hotter. Over rubbed, dry tobacco produces particles that can obstruct the airway or end up in your mouth as little missiles.

I have NO idea what an Otter’s Pocket is but I’m with Ropey and I smoke my tobacco moist and keep it humidified after opening. The flavors of moist tobacco are more crisp and alive and I have better control filling my bowl. Yes, I occasionally have problems but more when the tobacco is dry. Dry tobacco does light better so perhaps fill with moist tobacco and leave the pipe for a while to let the top layer dry a bit. Best of both worlds.

If your pipe is gurgling and you use a pipe tool to clear the tobacco away from the airway you should find that it has stopped gurgling.

When I refer to moist tobacco I mean as it is when opened or close to that level of moisture but not soggy. You know what I mean.

I was right, it was too dry for my tastes. It seemed like most of the flavor was gone.
It was St. James Flake and while that is currently my go to tobacco, it wasn't that good. So I guess I'm in the liking it more on the moist side too.

I'm not much of a clencher so I don't think that's the issue.

Having it packed too tightly at the bottom and being overly aggressive with the tamper may be causing an issue though.
I think I'll try packing the tobacco while a pipe cleaner is ran all the way into the bowl. Then I should be able to pull it out and leave a small air pocket there.

Also, I tend to puff too often. I know that could very well contribute as well.

Hi Paul,

I had similar issues when I began to change over to (predominately) flakes. I fold and stuff (gently) at the bottom of the bowl, with the only pressure to position and press the edged (at the wall) slightly. If I packed too light I can compensate with the tamper as I smoke. Additionally, puffing too much is often a side effect of too tight a pack. You know that you've got it when it the taste is good and you haven't though about the pipe while smoking.
