Shisha tobacco in a regular pipe?

I used to really enjoy smoking a shisha (or nargila, or hooka) on occasion. The tobacco was from Egypt and other parts of the middle east, coated in molasses and sometimes flavored. The best were apple and cherry. Mint was pretty good, too. I stopped because there were some reports about how the sugars from the molasses crystalize on your lungs, like that glassy black stuff in the chimneys of coal-burning fireplaces. It's supposed to be really bad news, and you do inhale really deeply with a water-pipe.

But I was thinking - what about smoking this stuff in a briar or cob? Anyone ever try it?

I searched online for the tobacco types used in these blends, and someone mentioned that for one company (Nakhla in Egypt) the flavored ones had a VA base, and the others were made with something called Iphani Tombak. I also saw references to Shirazi from Iran, Yayladag from Turkey, and Chadapadia from, India. Anybody know anything about thess, or if any of are already used in pipe blends? Pete @NeverBend ?

I used to do the hookah from time to time, but gave it up as it was just too much of a hassle. I hadn't heard about the sugar buildup in the lungs, but it wouldn't surprise me. I think shisha would be too goopy to work in a pipe. Might be in interesting experiment to try blending small amounts of it with some VA.

Good point, and nice idea. It's cheap enough - like $2.50 for 50g through some online retailers. I used to have a few small boxes but when the glass bowl of my hookah broke I got rid of everything. And yeah, it is a hassle with the charcoal and all that. I only smoked it a few of times a year with friends, but always really enjoyed it when I did.

I sold a few hookahs and bought one when I was in Istanbul as a kid (1971) that I lost track of and never smoked. That's everything I know about them.

Its probably wayyyyy to wet to burn by itself without a glowing coal right on top of it... Also, if biting the bullet and trying it, I'd probably do it out of a cob you don't much care for or a beater since it'll probably VERY SERIOUSLY ghost the pipe.
If it does actually burn it'll definately build some serious cake, too...

Didn't say it was good, or good for you. Just said I did it. Not recommended. It was a protest against my kids' Mt. Dew flavored glop. Failed miserably.

No way I could ever smoke one of those things.
Looks too much like a bong. I have a very low opinion of the pot-head, party types so I could never go there.
I'd qualify that with 'no offense' but I really don't care if someone's offended or not. LOL!
That and I don't inhale tobacco smoke because black lungs can't be a good thing.

I thought about that, but some flakes come pretty wet, too, and often smoke better with some drying. You don't think the same would work here? I did read last night on a hookah forum that shisha tobacco only "heats" instead of burns - comments like "Hookah tobacco isn't meant to be burned, only heated, so smoking it in a pipe would give you really harsh, disgusting smoke." Kinda sounds like BS to me, considering that there is a big lump of charcoal burning the tobacco and creating the smoke.... Smoke doesn't come from heating or steaming.

All the of shisha I have has been wetter than any pipe tobacco, imagine putting maple syrup on a broken flake, and you'll have the same consistency.

I have heard the steam vs smoke thing too, but when you are finished with a hookah, what is left in the head are not ashes like a pipe or cigar, but more of a dry, crusty remains.

It's been a good few years since I smoked it, so don't really remember the consistency. But I assume the wet in flakes is more due to PG than to syrup and molasses, so I guess you're right. And yeah, I remember that about there being little ash but thought it was due to crystalizing sugar rather than steaming.

So I guess I'm not going to go out of my way to try this after all! Still curious about the varieties of tobacco they use, though. I wonder if they're obtainable without the syrups.
