MOLD!!! First issue with this.

So I'm in the mood for a cigar this afternoon, so I go digging through the humidor to see what jumps out at me.
I decide to smoke a Montecristo Platinum tubo I picked up at a place in Branson last summer.

I take it outside and remove it from the tube to find this.

Needless to say I was terrified. I went through all of my cigars and inspected them very carefully and found no other mold. I'm hoping and praying that this is the only one and that the tube had something to do with it. It was lined with a cedar sleeve which they say is supposed to help with mold, but it didn't stop this one.

My humidity is controlled by 65% Heartfelt beads and stays around 63% or so, so I don't think I will have any additional issues.
I'm also glad that this was the one effected. There are several Anejos, a couple of Davidoff Nicaragua box pressed, an OpusX or two, some Padron Anniversary stuff, and a few from about 70 miles south of Miami in there. I would cry if I had a mold outbreak.
I don't have a lot of sticks, but the ones I have are quality.

So now I'm on the balcony with a Padron 1964 maduro, thanking the almighty that it was only one stick.
I will be watching very closely in the next few weeks.

Was the cap still on the tubo? I've heard that removing the cap before storing is a great idea. Something about the environment being trapped inside, and how airtight they can be is a mold incubator.

I don't have any tubos so I'm just going off some other seasoned BOTL comments when it comes to cigars in tubes.

And yes thankfully it was only one!

I think that's actually plume :)

But cereally, yes, good advice on taking the cap off of tubos.

I rarely have problems with tubos because I never buy them because I'm too cheap :)

We're not cheap, we're thrifty.......

I had an NC RyJ tubos given to me for a birthday or sonething thankfully I opened it because it had mold when I got it. It was just a few spots on the wrapper like that one that wiped right off. I tossed the tube and quarantined the stock in a zip lock for a few days and nothing came back. I eventually smoked it and haven't died yet, you should be fine as long as it isn't on the foot.

Yeah, it was some of that furry plume. lol

I tossed it. Not taking a chance. It was $9 so I view it as a cheap lesson. Either take the cap off of tubos or remove them completely.
I just can't believe mold grew at 65%. I didn't think that would happen. However I don't know the RH of the humidor it was in before I bought it.

Recently smoked one of two Dunhill cigars that had been in their ceder sleeved Tubes for four or more years.
Neither had any signs of Mold. The one smoked had near zero taste. Tossed the second one.
Might just be that the cigar when Cedar sleeved was wet enough and the time in the Tube more likely was to blame for the Mold.
Remember seeing a tubed cigar on the Dashboard of a car, windows closed, all day, on a 95-100+ F. day,
expect that might've been less than best for that Cigar.
Have not seen any problems with any of the Pepin Garcia Cedros Cigars.
And come to think of it there're the Boxed La Gloria Cubana Cigars, in Cedar sleeves, Temps & Humidity in Havana not too low.,
Think I'd blame the time in the Tube.
After all look at the effect on taste too much time watching the Tube has on folks.

Edit: Completely wron ( above ) saying the La Gloria Cubanas were sleeved in Cedar the nameon the box is really CETROS, maybe refers to the box.

Mold always makes my sphincter turn into a starfish that is locked up so tight that turns into a black hole or brown. Have only dealt with it a few times in my life but it just pisses off the good humor man. We treat them well and provide a safe environment for them and we ensure that we buy the right tools and still a few fall through the cracks and ruin our day. If you find one then it's always the best plan to quarantine the rest and watch over them like a jealous boyfriend.

I have had a few cigars with mold. Most of which were that way when I recieved them and all of them were either cedar lined or in tubes. Consequently I now take all my sticks out of their tubes or sleeves just for extra precaution. It's probably just coincidence but it makes me feel better anyway.

I don't think that was on you. I think it was a little bit wet when it was shoved in the tin can, but who knows?....

Generally, if you can return the cigar to the place that sold it to you, they'll magically turn the mold into plume ...

Unless, of course, you buy a Guten Cala "Blauer Kase," which relies on a particular species of mold (found only at a depth of 12 feet, 4.732 inches, on the rocks lining the walls of one specific well on the far northwesterly extreme of the border between Inner and Outer Mongolias) to fully develop the flavor. And the unique, mottled color ...

wipe it off and smoke away.

unless its on the foot, then its no Bueno.
