Just because of this, if it's going to be dark, I generally try to think about removing the band first.
That's when it is the stickiest...wait til the burn line is almost an inch...it will melt the adhesive and the band comes off easier ...usually.

The band is for protecting your cigar from your greasy fingers when you're smoking while working. The band stays on. It pisses me off when some idiot manufacturer puts the band too far down the cigar or puts such a wide band that I need to tear half of it off to avoid wasting half the stick.
Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity.
