I've been smoking cigars for a couple years and I've never purchased a box.

I usually buy 5ers and occasionally C-Bid will do bundles of 10 pretty cheap (I got some Oliva O maduros that way).
Lots of singles.

I'm tempted to pick up a couple of boxes of inexpensive sticks that I enjoy. With my situation (full time student) the higher end smokes (Opus X, Anajo, Davidoff Nicaragua, Padron 1964 etc.) will continue to be purchased in singles to be enjoyed on special occasions.

As far as what I keep on hand, as you can ascertain from above, its mostly every day smokes like Pinar Del Rio Sungrown or Oscuros, Olivas, Brickhouse and stuff like that. Most of the time there will be 1 or 2 premium sticks in the midst waiting for the right time (like that T52 that's sitting there now).
