I am not a big cake fan, I like to keep mine minimal and I hate reaming with my knife...probably because of all the estates I get like the one

I do the same thing. The cake on my pipe is probably about half the thickness of a dime. Just a uniform even coat so there is no raw briar.
It's really the preference of the smoker.
