I have yet to get my hands on a meer.
What are some good brands to look for?

Apparently SMS is a good brand! I actually do like mine. It smokes great but I might think about getting a shorter stem. I like churchwardens but something about this one just doesn't work well for me.

Although they are no longer making them, CAO meerschaums are of good quality and can be found on Ebay. I have an SMS meerschaum and am very happy with it. If you're buying online, pay close attention to the measurements and get a sufficient sized pipe for your needs. Here's another company that I have never used but have heard good things about: http://altinokmeerschaumpipes.com/pipes.asp

+1 on the Altinok. I did a fair amount of internet research before buying & found them to be the best price/value point for what I wanted, which was a simple, plain jane meer made from block.
You oughta know not to stand by the window, somebody see you up there.
