I was slumming for values and got nipped at the wire on several pipes, only buying this one for $16.85 ($10.50 + $5.35 ship) but regret being the under bidder on a 1930s KBB Paragon billiard that looked the part (and I would have smoked it) that went for $20.52 (total).
I believe that this pipe is a Charatan handmade 2nd because of the flat bottom of the tobacco chamber (made by a lathe), wall thickness, shape and grain. Very Charatan in shape as well. I have a fuzzy memory that Herman Lane told me that his retail store was called Tobacco Lane and that dovetails perfectly although the pipe doesn't look 60 years old and I'd want confirmation on the name to make that claim.

@Ropey , This is a classic Bull Cap (smaller pipe).

Seller's history of the pipe claims that it's a Peter Matzhold. I thought that whoever made it had a lot of talent. I should get another late night hobby besides PAD.

I pulled the trigger on a rustic natural brandy.
Picked up a couple Vulcanite Forever stems and a couple Fancy Forever stems, a 3" Ocean Blue and a Green Swirl Nosewarmer.
Hi Mark,
Good to see ya.
It's not a Matzhold and I bid on it accordingly but I liked the work, very meer in it's smooth lines and that's hard to do in briar.
I like to have a plan for my pipe purchases but I don't with this one. Its big and I've got some ideas but no plan.
The Tobacco Lane arrived and it's a handmade Charatan 2nd but some ninny extruded the tenon (slightly) so that it's a loose fit and I don't mess with tenons.

Bought this 100gr tin of Murrays Erinmore Mixture ($12.00 shipped). Contents are dry so it'll need a year or more in the hopper.
Made in Northern Ireland (Murrays) but 100gr (instead of 4oz) so it would appear to be a later original but I'm not sure of the year.

9 ounces of a custom blend from the "My Own Blend" create your own blend offer at Pipesandcigars.com. Nearing the bottom of the first bowl and I'm lovin' it.
Stopped in a local antique store today to just see if they had any old cobs for cheap. The only 2 pipes they had were these two briar's. Bought the pair for $7.50. I don't know anything about them. One says Varsity briar on the bottom of the bowl and the other says BER-Briar on it.

I made it 24 hours without buying a pipe on Ebay! I can't wait to share this news with my PAD support group!
I bought this pipe on Ebay several months ago and it was in rough condition. It's a Savinelli Punto Oro and it was all scuffed up and downright ugly then. Later, when on a completely different Ebay listing, I noticed in the description that the seller (knobby1041) offered to refurbish pipes and he offered to do the first one for free. After some research, he is a very well respected pipe maker, Bobby Owens. I took him up on the offer and sent this pipe to him and he made it look great. So I'm going to send him some more pipes in the future. His website is: http://www.bobbyowenspipes.com/

Interesting (to me) English made billiard with no brand. It may not be much but the price was right.

I picked up this GBD Clubhouse 269 for $12 on a whim. I was taken with the diamond shank and chair leg stem and dammit, I wanted this pipe. When I inspected it I discovered the shank was plugged and the bowl and finish was hurtin'. It was represented honestly enough and the price was right; I just wasn't prepared for the reality of the situation. It was just close enough to disposable to encourage me to risk screwing it up with my first restoration.

I've got to tell you, I was not sad. She's now one of my favorites, sweet and cool smoking and easy on the eyes.
Wow Jim. Nice work. Doesn't look like the same pipe.
Excellent job you did on that one! It's amazing.
Hi Jim,
Good to see you back and having seen some 'ashtrays' I'm not surprised at the quality of your restoration.
I'm most impressed with the way that you handled the bowl rim. You restored it without compromising it, very nice job. Glad that it smokes well.
Pete
I promised a friend that I'd re-evaluate McClellands so I bought tins or 1oz samples of their #2010, Tawny Flake and Black Woods along with Orlik Golden Sliced, and Gawith Hoggarth Kendal Mixture (and some pipe cleaners), all before the current P&C 48-hour 15% sale (site-wide) that's a good vehicle to buy some McClelland tins.
I'll also be buying a cobb, first one in many years, as part of my 'Perestroika', a bit like if Mao buying a McDonalds franchise to stick his toe in to Capitalism.
Just picked up this on the bay of E - should arrive next week.

Purports to come with original contents - we'll see; I was mainly interested in the tin as it appears to be in pretty close to mint condition.
Can anyone hazard a guess as to how old this might be? A slightly older BOTL co-worker says he remembers Velvet coming in tins well into the 70's but couldn't remember when they switched to plastic.
Pete,
Never really gone, traveling and working late. I kept an eye on you fellers. Since you mentioned it, I recently finished my first pipe ashtray.

Kind of turned into a pipe command center, but the field of pipe ashtrays is wide open, so I'm okay with that.
Went to the Gatlinburlier on Friday. I had picked this one out on the Pipes web cam but I couldn't get the website to work right. We parked at the Gatlinburg Visitors Center Park and Ride parking lot and rode the trolley into town. It's a lot less hassle than looking and paying for parking in town. They were closed the first time we went by so we walked to the other end of the strip and had breakfast. When I got back to the Gatlinburlier, the customer service was impeccable; I was given expert advice and 100% attention. In particular, I was hoping that the house pipes were stamped Gatlinburlier so that I would have it as a souvenir. The manager found a few stamped ones but not anything I was interested in, so I decided to buy this pipe which is a H.I.S. pipe. Also got the 8 oz. sampler of Cades Cove Cavendish, Mellow Moonshine, Mountain Mall Mix, and Newfound Blend. When you buy this combo, they also give you a Czech tool, a pipe cleaner holder full of pipe cleaners, and some matches. I've been wanting to try out some of their pipe tobaccos; they have high ratings on Tobaccoreviews.com.
