If plume isn't mold than just what is it?
I've been wondering this too thanks, posting to subscribe
It's from the oils in the tobacco leaf.
As it ages the oils are secreted from the leaf and leave behind a residue. It's a good thing and looks nothing like mold.

As stated, plume is the crystallization of sugars or oils from the leaf that have collected on the surface. Plume develops under certain conditions of temperature, humidity, and time that are favorable to cigars. Mold, as you know, is microbiological growth that also develops under certain conditions of temperature, humidity, and not always so much time, that is unfavorable for cigars.
It is debatable whether plume actually contributes to the enhancement of a cigar, or if it is merely an indicator of a well aged cigar stored under optimal conditions.

I work with fresh produce and an excellent example of plume is often found on fresh plums. I am yet to see plume on cigars, but apparently it happens.
