Well, if you open the tin, then certainly put it in a jar afterwards.
If you have not opened the tin, do this. Place the tin of tobacco into a gallon sized zip bag and leave overnight. The next morning, open the zip bag and see if you smell tobacco. If you do not, then the seal on the tin is good and you should be fine to leave it there until you decide to open it. Once you open it, I would get it into a jar within a day or two.
The only time I don't worry about jarring up a tin is when I have Samuel Gawith flake tobaccos like FVF, SJF or Navy Flake. Gawith blends come so wet, I know I will go through a tin before it has the opportunity to dry out. I've went back to a tin of FVF 6 weeks later and it was still very much smokeable.
I also agree with the Emporer that it seems that tobacco on the wet side stores a little better. Of course I tend to like most of them on the wet side. People always talk about letting it dry out more than you think necessary. I disagree. I like them a little moist. I think it holds more flavor that way and don't mind having to baby it to smoke it. Your opinion may vary and that is fine.
