Some more detailed notes on The Professor. This was the inaugural bowl in my newly-restored apple-shaped rusticated pipe which I believe is a Parker. Unlit the blend smells very sweet with vanilla, and maybe caramel or maple, and fairly smoky. I like the chunky cut.
First impressions smoking it (and remember I only started smoking a pipe this year) are that this is an exceptionally smooth, very flavorful but mild smoke. Smoke output is impressive and it's more complex than I'd expected, given Pete's description (making me even more curious about Einstein). I like the interplay of the vanilla aroma with the latakia, and I think I'm tasting a pretty prominent Oriental component. In fact, if I had to compare this with the limited number of blends I've had so far, I say it reminds me vaguely of EMP. I'm also getting a pretty pronounced perfume-like floral note. Of course I may be way off, but that's how I'm experiencing it. It did take some work keeping it lit at first, and next time I'll try giving it a little drying (though this could also just be my technique or the pipe). It just so happens that I've been curious about latakia-aromatic blends lately, and The Professor turns out to be pretty much what I'd hoped they'd be like. As with cigars, I also appreciate lots of flavor but with little nicotine power, and this blend really delivers this.
